I have no idea but I do know sometimes you have to step away from your everyday, explore alternate paths, observe and open up to new ideas. Work breaks don’t always have to be totally separate to what your livelihood fills your day or nights with. Sometimes relaxing and observing similar businesses, products or services can inspire, motivate or gift you ideas.
I’m not talking about competitor analysis. I think it’s about validation, confirmation, admiration ... so many other things. My occupational therapy has always been going to galleries, watching documentaries on art or artists, reading a book on a period of art or a biography of an artist.
For the artist, this is a wonderful period of access, intimacy and adventure. With all of the restrictions and lack of travel I’ve had to get my fix in ways other than I used to. (Yes I’m one of those people that travel companions will eventually say “not another museum!” Lol.) This at home stuff has opened up a whole new world of art to me — in the last week I’ve been to Toronto, Miami, New York, Venice (Italy), Brazil — these virtual happenings have gifted me insight to other artists’ process, concept patterns, and afforded me dates with colleagues for discourse on the topics. I love it - I don’t want to think of zoom in dread - I accept it and try to go with it. You never know where it will take you.
So, if I can’t get to the easel today (as I do have to do the admin side of business) I can take my visual breaks and enjoy the art in my studio space, and look forward to listening to a conversation hosted by the new museum (NYC) tonight and a virtual date with a friend to chat about it after. Fun!
What will you do?
