If your team were a painting how would you look at it?

The art of objectively critiquing your team.

the collection = your team

Staying on top of how your team is doing is critical to developing and ensuring a positive team culture and ultimately growing your business. It’s not unlike an art critique.

This is how I critique my own work and how it parallels to conducting a team critique (performance reviews)! Then you can line up your team and use the same (or similar lol) method.

A critique is not an emotional review. It is intended to be professional, objective and a growth experience. Every so often I have to step back and see where my art has been and where it is going (team assessment). Sometimes that’s from photo’s of sold paintings (completed projects) but more importantly it’s with my inventory that’s available (team members) and art that I am working on (company goals and objectives).

I line the pieces up against a wall. Then I put ‘like’ pieces together. The “likes” might be based on the concept or the evolution of a solution to an idea . When I have a group of paintings that are similar to each other I line those up to view the collection.

Then I review the collection (your team) and then the individual artwork (team members) in concept, composition and technique.

the critique goes something like this...

how the collection aligns with the story that my series are telling (corporate vision); I look at the elements within the content - the figures, the colours, the textures, the movement (what makes that person tick);

then I judge the composition - where the focus is, how I lead the eye through and to the focus, what breathing space I give to elements within
(the tasks and autonomy to the role);

and technique - whether my skill in execution is improving, is it achieving a portrayal of the emotion and concept I want people to receive, should I look to other artists ? take a course ? practice a technique that will advance both my skill in execution and deliver my ideas in the way I want them to ?
 (professional development requirements).

Whether I like a painting or not, I evaluate it - sometimes it doesn’t make it to my work for sale, sometimes I rework it, sometimes it inspires a new concept and occasionally I paint over the piece and reuse the canvas (develop or new hire).

Collector feedback - comments, analysis and reception by others also feeds my information line on where my work is at or where it’s going
(project analysis, client and customer reviews).

"...you somehow took my life and displayed it beautifully. This painting shows my trials, tribulations, successes and my scars. I have never purchased a painting before. Never have I even been captivated or drawn in before. So I want to thank you." Natasha

This is when I realize that, while I paint what I think, others can relate and it is one of my goals for my concepts to reach out and be experienced as suits the collector's life situation.

customer reviews & feedback

At the end of this critique session I arrive at realizations, confirmations, a to-do list, new directions... (action plan) in short, I continue to develop as an artist.
